Mr. Gary Leon Johnson, age 73, of Chatsworth, Georgia, passed away peacefully at Emory University Hospital on Sunday, August 16, 2026, surrounded by the family who loved him so dearly.

Gary was a hardworking man, a devoted husband and father, a proud grandfather, a loyal friend, and a man whose greatest joy was found in the people he loved.

For Gary, family always came first. He shared 49 years and 8 months of marriage with his wife, Rita Diane Johnson. Together they built a life, raised a family, and created nearly five decades of memories that will continue through their children and grandchildren.

Gary was a worker by nature. Sitting still was never really his way. He took pride in a good day's work and enjoyed having something to accomplish. When he was healthy, he especially loved working on swimming pools with Pool Guys. Even during his illness, one of the things Gary wanted most was simply to get better and get back to work. That determination said a great deal about the man he was. He believed in working hard, doing things right, and being someone others could depend on.

But Gary knew how to enjoy life, too.

He loved spending time with family and friends and enjoyed sitting down for a good game of chess or backgammon. He also had a great love for music and guitars. Over the years, Gary collected many guitars, and there was something special about having one in his hands and playing music. His guitar collection wasn't simply a collection of instruments-it represented something he genuinely enjoyed and a part of who he was.

And when Gary finally did slow down for a while, there was a good chance you could find him watching one of his Westerns. He enjoyed the old stories, characters, and familiar movies and shows that he could return to time and again.

Whether he was working on a swimming pool, playing his guitar, thinking several moves ahead over a chessboard, playing backgammon, watching a Western, or simply spending time with the people he cared about, Gary enjoyed the things that made life his own.

Those who knew Gary will remember much more than the illness he faced at the end of his life. They will remember the man who spent a lifetime working, providing, helping others, making music, enjoying his friends, and above all, loving his family.

His final months were difficult, but they never defined the life Gary lived. Through it all, his family remained beside him-advocating for him, caring for him, encouraging him, and making certain he was never alone. When his long journey came to an end, Gary was surrounded by those he loved.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Phillip Riley Johnson and Patricia Quida Hopkins, and his brother, Charles Thomas Johnson.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years and 8 months, Rita Diane Johnson; daughter, Tabitha Roe (Tony) of Salem, Oregon; sons, Chris Johnson (Lacey) and Jeremiah Johnson, both of Chatsworth, Georgia; sisters, Maxine Fanning, Syndi Barber, Pattie Moss, and Earlene Manning, all of Florida; brother-in-law, James Bingham (Cindy) of Dalton, Georgia; and six grandchildren, who were an important part of the family he loved so deeply.

Gary leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a family that will continue carrying his love, his work ethic, his determination, his humor, and his stories forward.

There will always be an empty place where Gary once stood, but there will also always be reminders of him-in the family he helped build, in the work he took pride in, in friendships made over the years, around a swimming pool on a summer day, in the sound of a guitar being played, during an old Western, and anytime someone sits down for a good game of chess or backgammon.

A man's life is not measured only by the years he lived, but by the people he loved, the work he took pride in, the memories he created, and the lives that are different because he was here.

Gary did those things well.

He worked hard.
He played his guitars.
He enjoyed the simple things.
He valued his friends.
And most importantly, he loved his family.

That is the Gary Johnson his family will remember.

And that is the legacy he leaves behind.

Services celebrating the life of Mr. Gary Leon Johnson will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at Fairy Valley Baptist Church, 8935 Highway 411, Crandall, Georgia 30711.

May those who knew and loved Gary find comfort in the countless memories they shared with him and in knowing that, at the end of his long and difficult journey, he was surrounded by love.
