Franklin B. (Buddy) Smith

Buddy Smith, age 63, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2026, after a brave and courageous five-year battle with cancer.

Buddy was born on April 24, 1963, in Carrollton, Georgia, and was raised in Toccoa, Georgia, a place that helped shape the man he became. He carried with him the values of kindness, hard work, loyalty, and treating people the right way. In his later years, Buddy called Brookhaven, Georgia home. For five years, Buddy fought cancer with a strength and courage that inspired everyone around him. He faced each day with determination, grace, and the same steady spirit that defined his life. Even through his hardest days, Buddy remained grateful for the people he loved and the memories he made.

Buddy was a man who knew how to enjoy life and appreciate the simple pleasures. He loved cooking, good food, and eating adventurously. He enjoyed trying new flavors, exploring different cuisines, and sharing meals and experiences with the people around him. For Buddy, food was more than just a meal—it was a way to connect, celebrate, and create memories with family and friends. Buddy also had a deep love for music, which brought him joy and was a special part of his life. Buddy had a wonderful sense of adventure and loved skiing and traveling, always looking forward to new places, new experiences, and the stories that came from them. He had a kind heart, a gentle spirit, and a way of making people feel welcome. Those who knew Buddy will remember his friendship, his humor, his generosity, and the many good times shared together. Above all, Buddy was a proud and loving father. His greatest joy was his son, Collin “Hunter” Smith, who will forever carry his father’s love and memory in his heart. 

Buddy was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Carolyn B. Smith, his beloved father, Marion E. (Buddy) Smith, and companion, John Gooch. Buddy is survived by his son, Collin “Hunter” Smith; Hunter’s mother, Ashley Mitchell Smith; his sister, Julie Smith Kesler, numerous nieces and nephews, and his special friend, Hans Sedlmaier; along with extended family and many dear friends who loved him dearly.

The family would like to offer a heartfelt thank you to Joe Flores, Greg Sipes, Hans Sedlmaier, and Shari Aizenman for the friendship, love, and care they gave Buddy, especially during his final days. Their kindness and presence brought comfort and meant more than words can express.

Though Buddy’s time here on earth has come to an end, the memories he created, the lives he touched, and the love he shared will live on. He leaves behind a legacy of courage, kindness, laughter, and a reminder to enjoy life’s simple blessings—good food, good music, good friends, and the moments that matter most.

A short memorial service celebrating Buddy’s life will be held on August 1, 2026, at 1:00 PM Central Time at Greenwood Cemetery (Greenwood Baptist Church) in Attalla, Alabama. Following the service, family and friends are invited to gather for a meal and fellowship at Keener Baptist Church.
